Severe Snowfall and Rainfall Plague Gilgit Baltistan, Residents Struggle with Daily Life and Access to Basic Amenities

Residents of several areas in Gilgit Baltistan, including Hopar, are facing significant challenges due to ongoing severe snowfall and rainfall. The adverse weather conditions have hindered day-to-day activities and caused disruptions in the movement of traffic.

In Hopar, where heavy snowfall has been persistent, approximately 12,000 residents are grappling with the aftermath. Situated at an altitude of around 8,000 feet, the area has only one Public Health Center (PHC), which lacks adequate medical staff and quality medication. Locals are urging the government to address the deteriorating road conditions, which pose risks to safety and accessibility.

Roads in the region have become hazardous due to snow accumulation, raising concerns about potential accidents. Despite these challenges, no serious incidents have been reported so far.

Meanwhile, other areas in Gilgit Baltistan are also experiencing severe rainfall, exacerbating the difficulties faced by residents. Communication links to Karakoram, Diamer, Skardu-Gilgit, Giadar-Gilgit, Nagar, and Hunza have been disrupted, with sections of roads blocked. Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors until the weather conditions improve.

This recurring issue underscores the annual struggles of Gilgit Baltistan residents, who contend with water shortages during the winter months. Freezing temperatures often lead to the solidification of tap water, forcing locals to rely on seasonal tributaries for water supply. For many, collecting water from distant villages like Chipurson and Ispenj becomes a daily necessity, essential for survival, livestock, and household chores.

As residents continue to cope with these challenges, there is a pressing need for government intervention to ensure the provision of essential services and infrastructure maintenance in Gilgit Baltistan.
