Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina plans to return to Bangladesh once the new caretaker government sets a date for elections, her son has revealed. Hasina, who left for India on Monday after enduring weeks of severe protests that led to her resignation, is currently staying in India. The interim government, headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, took office on Thursday and will oversee the election process.
In an interview with a leading publication, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Hasina’s son who resides in the US, stated, “For the time being, she (Hasina) is in India. She will go back to Bangladesh the moment the interim government decides to hold an election.”

Hasina’s Awami League party is not included in the interim government, which came about after a student-led uprising and nationwide violence that resulted in approximately 300 deaths and thousands of injuries. Currently, Hasina is staying in a secure location in New Delhi. Although there are reports suggesting she might seek asylum in Britain, the British Home Office has not commented on the matter.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned on Thursday that he had discussed Bangladesh with his British counterpart but did not provide any specifics.
Joy also expressed his willingness to enter politics if necessary, stating, “I am sure the Awami League will take part in the election and we might even win.”
