South Korean Army Chief Receives Guard of Honour in New Delhi Ahead of Indo-Pacific Armies Chiefs Conference

General Park Jeong-Hwan, the Chief of Staff of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) Army, was accorded the prestigious honour of a Guard of Honour at the magnificent South Block Lawns in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Before this ceremonial event, General Park Jeong-Hwan paid his respects at the National War Memorial by laying a wreath, a solemn gesture that honours the sacrifices of fallen heroes.

The South Korean Chief of Staff’s visit to India is in conjunction with his participation in the biennial Indo-Pacific Armies Chiefs Conference, which spans three days and is being hosted in New Delhi. During this significant gathering, military and arms cooperation discussions are anticipated to take place amongst various high-ranking officials and counterparts.

The 13th edition of the biannual Indo-Pacific Armies Chiefs Conference (IPACC), the 47th annual Indo-Pacific Army Management Seminar (IPAMS), and the 9th Senior Enlisted Forum were jointly organized by the Indian and U.S. armies. The event, held from September 25 to 27, notably stood as the most extensive conference for land forces in the region.

The primary objective of these meetings is to foster peace and stability within the Indo-Pacific region by promoting mutual understanding, dialogue, and camaraderie among participating senior land commanders. This collaborative effort seeks to facilitate the exchange of perspectives, ideas, and the strengthening of connections, as highlighted in an official release from the U.S. embassy.

This year’s conference is centred around the theme “Together for Peace: Sustaining Peace and Stability in the Indo-Pacific Region,” featuring both extensive plenary sessions and smaller, more focused breakout sessions. Participants engaged in lively discussions covering a wide array of topics, including peacekeeping operations, humanitarian aid and disaster relief, leadership development, and women’s empowerment, all while benefiting from insights provided by distinguished guest speakers.

Notably, the participation in IPAMS has grown significantly since its inception in 1977, evolving from nine nations in the initial conference held in Honolulu, Hawaii, to 31 nations in Seoul, Korea, in 2017. IPACC, which takes place every two years, is jointly hosted by the United States Army and the host country, while IPAMS remains the longest-running annual land forces conference. In 2014, the Senior Enlisted Forum (SELF) was introduced, allowing senior enlisted members to partake in fellowship, discussions, and shared experiences from a unique perspective.

The conference’s commencement included an opening ceremony on September 26 at the Manekshaw Center, preceded by a joint press conference featuring Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande and General Randy George, the U.S. Army Vice Chief of Staff, held at 9 a.m.
