Elon Musk, billionaire entrepreneur and advisor to US President Donald Trump, has announced a major shake-up in the federal workforce. On Saturday, Musk revealed that all federal employees must provide a detailed account of their weekly work activities. Failure to comply could result in job termination.
Musk, who has been tasked with reducing government spending and eliminating waste, made the announcement through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Consistent with the President’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation,” Musk stated.
However, he did not provide further details on what the work reports should include or set a deadline for submissions.
Federal Workforce Reduction Already Underway
This announcement comes amid a broader effort by the Trump administration to reduce the federal workforce. Just last week, the Department of Defense was ordered to cut its civilian staff by at least five percent starting next week. Additionally, many probationary federal employees have already been dismissed as part of cost-cutting measures.
Elon Musk’s Role in Government Efficiency
In a bold move, President Trump appointed Musk to lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The department’s mission is to significantly cut public spending, streamline operations, and address waste and alleged corruption within the government. Musk has been given broad authority to implement these reforms, but his aggressive approach has faced legal challenges and resistance from government unions.
Despite the pushback, Musk has spearheaded large-scale layoffs, dismissing a significant number of federal workers in an effort to meet the administration’s cost-cutting targets.
Trump Urges Musk to Be ‘More Aggressive’
President Trump has expressed strong support for Musk’s initiatives but wants him to push even harder. Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote:
“Elon is doing a great job, but I would like to see him get more aggressive. REMEMBER, WE HAVE A COUNTRY TO SAVE, BUT ULTIMATELY, TO MAKE GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. MAGA!”
This statement highlights the administration’s urgency in carrying out workforce reductions and efficiency measures, reinforcing Musk’s role in the restructuring efforts.
