Swedish Member of Parliament (MP) Margareta Elisabeth Cederfelt affirmed Sweden’s support for Ukraine while expressing her disapproval of Russia and Belarus attending the Nobel Prize award ceremony. The Nobel Foundation reversed its initial decision to invite the ambassadors of Russia, Belarus, and Iran to the event due to widespread criticism.
In an interview with ANI in Dharamshala, Cederfelt emphasized the importance of Sweden standing by Ukraine in its struggle to protect its territory and sovereignty. She stressed that this issue extends beyond Ukraine, encompassing the broader concept of the free world and Sweden’s role as a member of the European Union. Cederfelt underscored Sweden’s support for sanctions against individuals from Russia and Belarus who are on the sanctions list, emphasizing that they are not welcome in Sweden or the European Union.
A delegation of Swedish MPs, led by Margareta Elisabeth Cederfelt from the Moderate Party, visited Dharamshala to participate in the 63rd Tibetan Democracy Day. MPs from various Swedish political parties, including the Sweden Democrats Party, the Christian Democrats Party, and the Green Party, were also present at the event.
Janine Sofia Alm Ericson from the Green Party echoed similar sentiments, expressing surprise at the initial invitation to Russia, especially in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. She noted that many Swedish political leaders had objected to the invitation, leading to its withdrawal, which was met with approval.
MP Richard Johannes Jomshof added that the people of Sweden are opposed to the war in Ukraine and did not support the invitation extended to Russia for the Nobel event.
