If tensions were to be solved after the flee of just resigned PM Sheikh Hasina, it would have been something, but that’s not the case. The quota protest has turned violent to an extent that the mass protesters have now begun targeting minorities and are on the run to attack them.
It is clear that the Islamists have chosen to take advantage of the violence in the country and are attacking Hindus. Several reports from around the country describe Islamist mobs attacking Hindu homes, burning them, and abducting women, creating a situation of extreme violence and lawlessness.
Eyewitnesses and videos from the affected areas show disturbing scenes of Hindu homes being looted and set on fire, and women being kidnapped. The attackers are carrying out these acts with little regard for the law or the safety of individuals, spreading fear and suffering among the Hindu population.
The situation has escalated to a point where the Hindu community lives in constant fear, and the lack of a strong government response has only encouraged the attackers. International human rights groups have condemned the violence and called for immediate action to protect the Hindu minority. However, the Bangladeshi authorities have been slow to act, leaving the situation critical.
On August 4, violent clashes resulted in around 100 deaths, including a Hindu councillor. Hindu homes and temples, such as those belonging to ISKCON and the Kali temple, were specifically targeted, forcing many devotees to seek safety.
In response to the ongoing violence, an indefinite curfew has been imposed. The clashes between protesters demanding Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and her supporters have intensified, leading to 101 fatalities. The government has cut off internet access and imposed a nationwide curfew as the violence continues, especially between opponents and activists from the Awami League, Chhatra League, and Jubo League.
