As Tennessee football prepares to face NC State, the Volunteers are grappling with key absences among their backup players. A Tennessee spokesperson confirmed that running back Cam Seldon and linebacker Kalib Perry are officially out for the game, while freshman linebacker Edwin Spillman was seen in street clothes during pregame warmups, signaling his unavailability. The loss of these players adds to Tennessee’s depth concerns as the Vols look to continue their winning momentum.
Cam Seldon, who recently underwent shoulder surgery during spring practice, has been dealing with injury issues throughout the fall camp. Despite his limited participation in preseason activities, Seldon managed to play in Tennessee’s season opener against Chattanooga last week, contributing as Dylan Sampson’s backup at running back and returning kicks for the Vols. However, his shoulder issues have resurfaced, forcing him to miss the game against NC State.

With Seldon sidelined, the Vols will rely on redshirt freshman DeSean Bishop as the primary backup running back. Additionally, sophomore Khalifa Keith and freshman Peyton Lewis are expected to step up, providing much-needed depth in the backfield. Seldon’s absence also means a reshuffle in special teams, where Tennessee will have to find another option for kick returns.
Tennessee’s linebacker corps is also feeling the strain as Kalib Perry and Edwin Spillman are both unavailable for the NC State game. Perry, a backup inside linebacker, and Spillman, listed as a third-string inside linebacker, are key rotational players whose absences will test the Vols’ defensive depth.
With Perry and Spillman out, Tennessee’s linebacker duties will heavily fall on the trio of Keenan Pili, Arion Carter, and Jeremiah Telander. Should the Vols need to rotate more linebackers, Jalen Smith could see increased action. Smith showed promise in Tennessee’s dominant win over Chattanooga, positioning himself as a reliable option in case of further defensive demands.
The injuries have forced Tennessee to make significant adjustments heading into the NC State matchup. While the starting lineup remains mostly intact, the absence of key backups like Seldon, Perry, and Spillman has necessitated strategic changes on both offense and defense. The coaching staff will need to closely manage player rotations to prevent fatigue and maintain a high level of play throughout the game.
On the offensive side, the running game will rely more heavily on starters and younger players stepping up to fill the void left by Seldon. On defense, the inside linebacker group will have to remain disciplined, with fewer rotational options available.
Kickoff between Tennessee and NC State is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Carter-Finley Stadium. The game will be broadcast nationally on ABC, with Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, and Holly Rowe calling the action. The Vols, coming off a strong season opener, will look to overcome their injury woes and secure a crucial non-conference win on the road.
As Tennessee deals with the loss of key backup players, the focus will be on how well the team can adapt and execute against a challenging NC State squad. The Vols’ ability to manage their depth and adjust on the fly will be critical as they aim to keep their early season momentum rolling.
Tennessee’s coaching staff will undoubtedly be closely monitoring the status of injured players moving forward. The Vols hope to have Seldon, Perry, and Spillman back in action as the season progresses, but in the meantime, they’ll rely on younger talent and strategic adjustments to fill the gaps.
For now, the Vols are focused on the task at hand, determined to emerge from their matchup against NC State with a victory despite the challenges posed by their current roster limitations.
