The tornado that devastated Alabama state in the United States on Thursday has already claimed the lives of nine people. Local media reports stated that the rescue mission is still ongoing in the region.
Rescuers went door to door in various areas of Autauga County, which includes Marbury, looking for the dead and injured. Middle-school administrators in Spalding County, Georgia, used chainsaws to clear roadways to assist reconnect pupils stuck on campus with their parents.
Authorities reported a tree fell on a vehicle in adjacent Butts County, killing a 5-year-old kid and badly wounding one of his parents.
Autauga County, near Montgomery, has been hit the worst by the hurricane. According to a news article citing local officials, seven of the nine persons slain up until Friday belonged to Autauga County alone.
Although no fatalities have been recorded in Selma, a nearby community, much of the city has been damaged, including houses and businesses.
The storms have also impacted numerous other areas that have been recuperating after a harsh winter in the United States. Media reports stated that officials in the tornado-hit region have warned residents to stay off the roadways, warning of the dangers that linger even after the storm has passed.
Both fatalities recorded in Georgia city were caused by falling debris, including a 5-year-old in Butts County and a State Department of Transportation worker, officials said.
A major effort is underway to restore power to thousands of households. There might still be people trapped in the wreckage.
