Local authorities in Mozambique reported that over 90 people lost their lives when an overcrowded makeshift ferry sank off the north coast of the country. The converted fishing boat, which was carrying approximately 130 people, encountered difficulties while attempting to reach an island off Nampula province, officials stated.
“Because the boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers it ended up sinking … There are 91 people who lost their lives,” said Nampula’s secretary of state Jaime Neto.

Rescuers discovered five survivors and were continuing their search for more individuals, although challenging sea conditions were hindering their efforts. According to Neto, most passengers were attempting to flee the mainland due to panic induced by misinformation about cholera.
Mozambique, a Southern African nation plagued by poverty, has reported nearly 15,000 cases of the waterborne disease and 32 fatalities since October, as per government records.
Nampula is the hardest-hit region, comprising a third of all reported cases. An investigative team has been deployed to determine the causes of the boat disaster, stated the official.
