Former President Donald Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara at Mar-a-Lago on Friday. During the meeting, Trump warned that ongoing global conflicts could escalate into a Third World War if he does not win the 2024 presidential election.
This meeting came shortly after Netanyahu’s discussions with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington, D.C. Trump criticized Harris, asserting that she is “worse” on Middle Eastern issues, particularly concerning the Israel-Hamas conflict.
“We’ll see how it goes. But if it all works out, if we win, it’ll be very simple. It’s all going to work out. And very quickly. If we don’t, you’re going to end up with major wars in the Middle East. And maybe a third World War,” Trump stated. “You are closer to a third World War right now than at any time since the Second World War. We’ve never been so close because we have incompetent people running the country.”
Trump also commented on the Israel-Hamas conflict, suggesting that unresolved issues could lead to a full-scale war. He emphasized that a resolution is only possible if he secures victory in the November election.
In contrast, Vice President Harris, following her meeting with Netanyahu, reiterated her commitment to ensuring Israel’s ability to defend itself against threats from Iran and Iran-backed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. However, her remarks on the humanitarian situation in Gaza reportedly upset Netanyahu, according to Axios. An Israeli official noted that the prime minister was irked when Harris mentioned civilian casualties in Gaza, stating that U.S.-Israel alignment is crucial for regional stability and potential hostage negotiations.
This meeting underscores the sharp differences in foreign policy approaches between the current administration and Trump, highlighting the stakes of the upcoming election for U.S.-Middle East relations.
