In response to the recent political upheaval in Bangladesh, including the resignation and departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the British government has called for a United Nations-led investigation into the turmoil. Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the need for a thorough and independent probe into the events that have unfolded over the past few weeks.
“The people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events of the past few weeks. The UK wants to see action taken to ensure Bangladesh a peaceful and democratic future. The UK and Bangladesh have deep people-to-people links and shared Commonwealth values,” Lammy stated.
In his remarks, Lammy expressed concern over the “unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life” that have marked the recent turmoil in Bangladesh. He also highlighted the transitional period now announced by the Chief of the Army Staff in the wake of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
“All sides now need to work together to end the violence, restore calm, deescalate the situation, and prevent any further loss of life,” Lammy urged.
