UK ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigns as MP

Boris Johnson resigns as a member of Parliament on Friday, June 9, 2023, after receiving a report from the Privileges Committee that found he had misled Parliament about lockdown-breaking parties at Downing Street. Johnson said he was “bewildered and appalled” by the report, and that he had “no choice” but to resign.

The report by the Privileges Committee found that Johnson had “failed to discharge the requirements of the Ministerial Code” by misleading Parliament about the parties. The report also found that Johnson had “shown a lack of judgment” and that his actions had “damaged the reputation of the House of Commons.”

Johnson’s resignation comes after months of pressure from his own party and the public. He had faced calls to resign since the Partygate scandal first broke in December 2021. The scandal involved a series of parties that were held at Downing Street and other government buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic when strict lockdown rules were in place.

Johnson initially denied that any parties had taken place, but he later admitted that he had attended some of them. He apologized for his actions, but he refused to resign.

The pressure on Johnson to resign increased in recent weeks after the Privileges Committee announced that it would be investigating whether he had misled Parliament about the parties. The report by the Privileges Committee was published on Friday, and it found that Johnson had indeed misled Parliament.

In his resignation statement, Johnson said that he was “proud of the achievements of this government” and that he had “fought hard” to deliver on his promises. He also said that he was “sad to be leaving Parliament” and that he would “continue to serve the country in other ways.”

Johnson’s resignation is a major blow to the Conservative Party. He had been a popular leader, and his resignation will likely lead to a period of instability for the party. The Conservatives will now need to choose a new leader, and it is unclear who will be able to unite the party and win the next general election.
