Ukrainian President Zelenskyy holds talks with Brazilian counterpart Lula

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened with Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. During their inaugural in-person meeting, the leaders discussed the significance of fostering peace and sustaining dialogue between their nations. Zelenskyy described their conversation as “honest and constructive” and instructed their diplomatic teams to advance bilateral relations and peace initiatives.

On social media, Zelenskyy expressed the importance of the meeting and announced that Brazil would continue participating in the Peace Formula meetings.

Lula, in his own social media post, acknowledged the meeting with Zelenskyy and underscored the importance of pathways to peace and open dialogue between their countries.

Earlier, the Ukrainian President met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and thanked Germany for its support, particularly in terms of military aid and strengthening air defense, which is crucial for safeguarding Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, especially ahead of the winter season.

Zelenskyy also engaged in discussions with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister Mariya Gabriel, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. They deliberated on upholding the single market principle and enhancing access for Ukrainian agricultural products to the EU market. Zelenskyy highlighted the joint effort to establish “Solidarity Lanes” for increased transit and explored alternative routes to boost transit volumes while alleviating pressure on the domestic markets of Romania and Bulgaria.

At a United Nations Security Council session in New York, Zelenskyy criticized Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and emphasized the violation of the UN Charter. He urged for sustained support for Ukraine and called for reforms, particularly addressing the misuse of veto power by certain UN members, including Russia, which has hindered progress in addressing global conflicts and maintaining international norms.
