The US Department of Defense (DoD) has unveiled a substantial $425 million security assistance package to address Ukraine’s pressing security and defense requirements. This allocation encompasses the deployment of $125 million in security aid from DoD inventories, immediately fulfilling Ukraine’s frontline necessities. Additionally, $300 million in Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) funds has been designated to enhance Ukraine’s long-term air defense capabilities.
The DoD emphasized that this announcement marks the fifth tranche of equipment provided to Ukraine by the Biden administration since August 2021. The aid includes critical air defense resources, artillery ammunition, anti-tank weapons, and other equipment to bolster Ukraine’s capacity to counter Russia’s ongoing aggression.
This security assistance package utilizes previously authorized funds for Ukraine under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA). Notable components of this package consist of 12 heavy equipment transport trucks, as well as over 3 million rounds of small arms ammunition and grenades.
The announcement underscores the allocation of $300 million from the USAI available under the recent Congressional Continuing Resolution, depleting the remaining USAI funds earmarked to support Ukraine. The Biden administration continues to urge Congress to fulfill its commitment to Ukraine by approving additional funding to ensure its capacity to defend against Russia’s aggression.
The US is dedicated to collaborating with nearly 50 allies and partners who are collectively contributing approximately $35 billion in security assistance to Ukraine. Under US leadership, this global coalition has empowered Ukraine to successfully safeguard its sovereignty, regain control of more than half of the territory seized by Russian forces, and deter future aggression.
