In response to the recent Hamas attacks in Israel, the US State Department has recommended that American citizens reconsider their travel plans to Israel. The travel advisory for the West Bank has been elevated to Level 3, while the advisory for Gaza remains at the highest level, marked as “Level 4: Do Not Travel.” The State Department’s official statement, issued on October 11, 2023, explained the reasoning behind these changes, citing ongoing threats from terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists, and violent extremists who are actively plotting potential attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.
The advisory cautioned that these threats could materialize with little or no warning, targeting various locations frequented by tourists, transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, and local government facilities. It also highlighted a significant increase in demonstrations across Israel, some occurring without prior notice. The updated travel advisory urged individuals to adhere to the guidance provided by security and emergency response officials.
The statement further noted that while Ben Gurion International Airport remains operational, several major airlines have temporarily suspended flights. Travelers are encouraged to check with airlines for the availability and status of flights. Additionally, US citizens in Gaza seeking to leave and capable of doing so safely are advised to monitor the status of the Rafah Crossing into Egypt.
The advisory followed a major escalation on October 7 when Hamas initiated a surprise attack on Israel by launching rockets into the southern and central regions of the country. As of Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported significant casualties, with 1,200 Israelis killed and over 2,700 wounded. Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, the IDF spokesperson, emphasized the readiness of Israeli soldiers to carry out their mission in Gaza.
In the wake of these events, the US administration has been actively supporting Israel and deploying military assets to the region. Various US government agencies are collaborating to assess the situation on the ground accurately.
President Joe Biden, in a recent roundtable discussion with members of the Jewish community at the White House, reaffirmed his commitment to hostage rescue efforts, acknowledging the administration’s ongoing response to the crisis. However, he cautioned against disclosing specific details that could jeopardize the safe return of hostages.
Furthermore, President Biden issued a stern warning to Iran regarding its actions in the region following the Hamas attack on Israel. He stated that the US is providing additional military assistance to the Israeli Defense Forces, including ammunition and interceptors to replenish the Iron Dome. The US has also moved its carrier fleet to the eastern Mediterranean and is dispatching more fighter jets to the region, underscoring the message to Iran to exercise caution.
