South Belfast is witnessing disturbances since the weekend. The anti-immigration protest have damaged several business. The cops are also not left behind as they faced attacks amid protest.
On Monday night, riot police were sent to Sandy Row, near a supermarket that was set on fire, as petrol bombs and stones were thrown at officers. The police reported “ongoing disorder” in the Donegall Road area and advised people to stay away.
About a dozen people were involved in the violence, targeting several armored police vehicles. Officers in riot gear blocked off the street, and several fires were started in the area.
Earlier on Monday, Belfast City Council held a special meeting where they agreed to provide financial help to businesses damaged during Saturday’s violence. They decided to set up a financial assistance program for those affected by the racist attacks.
