Who is David Perdue? Donald Trump’s ‘Loyalist’ Nominated As Next US Ambassador To China

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has announced the nomination of former Senator David Perdue as the next U.S. ambassador to China. Trump made this announcement official on his ‘Truth’ social platform, praising him as a “loyal supporter and friend.”

“David has been a loyal supporter and friend, and I look forward to working with him in his new role!’, he said.

Trump has confirmed that Perdue has accepted his appointment as the next US ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, expressing confidence in his ability to handle the complexities of U.S.-China relations.

Who is David Perdue?

David Perdue, 74, served as a Republican senator from Georgia between 2015 and 2021. During his tenure, he was a member of both the Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, becoming the only Republican to serve on both panels. As Chair of the Sea Power Subcommittee, Perdue oversaw critical aspects of U.S. defense policy.

“David brings valuable expertise to help build our relationship with China,” Trump said in his statement. “He has lived in Singapore and Hong Kong and worked in Asia and China for much of his career. He will be instrumental in implementing my strategy to maintain peace in the region and establish a productive working relationship with China’s leaders.”

This marks a return to the practice of appointing former politicians to Beijing, contrasting with President Joe Biden’s choice of veteran diplomat Nicholas Burns for the role in 2021. During his first term as president, Trump appointed former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad as his ambassador to China.

Trump’s Tariff Threats To China

Trump has reiterated his plan to impose a 10% tariff on Chinese goods if Beijing fails to address fentanyl trafficking. While campaigning, he vowed taxes of more than 60% on Chinese imports.

He also proposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, raising concerns over heightened trade tensions.

Alongside Perdue, Trump, set to take over the presidential responsibilities on January 20, 2025, has nominated China hardliners for key positions in his administration, including Senator Marco Rubio for secretary of state.
