Independent candidate Mike Katz, a physician and former state senator, also challenged her, but ultimately, Blunt Rochester’s campaign proved to be victorious.

Throughout her campaign, Blunt Rochester stressed her commitment to creating jobs, expanding access to healthcare, and protecting reproductive rights. In an interview before Election Day, she emphasized that her Senate run was not just about breaking barriers, but about making a tangible difference. “I’m not doing this to make history. I’m doing this to make a difference,” Blunt Rochester said, reflecting her vision for a better future for Delawareans and all Americans.

Blunt Rochester’s message of unity was clear as she reached out to voters across the political spectrum. “I want to represent everyone,” she said, acknowledging that Delaware’s diverse political landscape includes voters who align with different political parties. “If I go to the Senate, we all go,” she added, signaling her desire to bring together people of all political views to work for the common good.

According to Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics, Black women make up nearly 8% of the U.S. population, yet their voices have been largely absent in the Senate. Blunt Rochester joins an exclusive group of Black women who have made it to the Senate, including Kamala Harris, Laphonza Butler, and Carol Moseley Braun.

Walsh emphasized the significance of having more Black women in the Senate, stating, “This is a historic moment, but we also should reflect on what is gained by having their voices in the conversation.” Blunt Rochester’s victory promises to be a powerful voice in advocating for civil rights, social justice, and the needs of working families.

Blunt Rochester’s Mentorship and Political Journey

Blunt Rochester’s political journey has been deeply influenced by her mentor, Senator Tom Carper. After interning for Carper, Blunt Rochester ascended through the ranks of Delaware politics, working in various government positions and gaining experience in both state and federal agencies. Carper, who handpicked her as his preferred successor, praised her dedication to public service and her unwavering commitment to making a positive difference.

Her personal story also plays a role in her victory. In 2014, Blunt Rochester experienced personal tragedy when her second husband passed away unexpectedly. His death inspired her to take on new challenges and run for office. Her resilience and dedication to public service led to her successful run for Congress in 2016.

Support from EMILY’s List

Blunt Rochester’s campaign received strong support from EMILY’s List, an organization that champions women running for office. EMILY’s List president Jessica Mackler praised Blunt Rochester as a “groundbreaking leader” who is a champion for women’s rights and civil rights. “We have been proud to stand with her throughout her career and cannot wait to see her make history in the U.S. Senate,” Mackler said in a statement.
