The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Wednesday that Parvathaneni Harish has been appointed as the next Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York. He is expected to assume the position soon, succeeding Ruchira Kamboj, who retired on June 1 of this year. Currently, Ambassador Harish is serving as India’s Ambassador to Germany, a role he has held since November 6, 2021.
Before his current role, Ambassador P. Harish served as Additional Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs, where he led the Economic Diplomacy Division, managing India’s bilateral economic relations with other countries and coordinating with various economic ministries of the Government of India. He also oversaw the Multilateral Economic Relations Division and served as the Indian Sous Sherpa for G20, G7, BRICS, and IBSA.

Since joining the Indian Foreign Service in 1990, Ambassador P. Harish studied Arabic at the American University of Cairo, achieving distinction in his examinations. He has served in Indian missions in Cairo and Riyadh and was India’s Representative to the Palestinian Authority in Gaza city. He was also seconded to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as the Chief of the Policy Analysis Unit at UNRWA Headquarters in Gaza.
Ambassador Harish has worked in the East Asia and External Publicity Divisions of the Ministry of External Affairs. From 2007 to 2012, he was the Joint Secretary and Officer on Special Duty to the Vice President of India. He later served as the Consul General of India in Houston from July 2012 to March 2016, covering eight states in the South and South-West of the United States. He was the Ambassador of India to Vietnam from April 2016 to June 2019.
Ambassador P. Harish holds a gold medal in Mechanical Engineering from Osmania University College of Engineering in Hyderabad and has also studied at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. He is married to Parvathaneni Nandita, and the couple has two daughters.
