Why was New York City Mayor Eric Adams indicted?

New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been indicted by federal juries on criminal charges. This makes him the first mayor to be charged while in office in the city’s history. The indictment has not yet been made public.

This comes after months of investigation, searches, and resignations from senior administrative officers, which indicates towards a worsening crisis inside the city’s leadership.

Investigation regarding Foreign Conspirancy

The exact accusations against Adams are not known yet. It is assumed that the focus of the Manhattan-based federal prosecutors’ probe is political contributions made by Adams during his mayoral campaign in 2021. Investigation is underway, suspecting the involvement of foreign governments’ conspiracies, like Turkey, to use a straw donor scheme to transfer illicit funds into his campaign. According to reports, investigations are also being conducted in South Korea, Uzbekistan, China, Israel, and Qatar.

The investigation was first made public in November 2023 when FBI officers raided the Brooklyn home of Adams’ principal fund-raiser, Brianna Suggs. Federal agents have also confiscated Adams’ personal devices in the months that followed, along with those of a number of close friends and high-ranking city officials, such as former Police Chief David Banks and Police Commissioner Edward Caban.

Adam’s response

Adams has however denied any allegation, releasing a video statement where he declared, “I am innocent” and vowed to fight the charges. He insisted that the indictment was based on “lies” and expressed his intention to remain in office while battling the legal challenges. In the video, Adams asked New Yorkers for their “prayers and patience” and maintained that his commitment to leading the city would not waver.

Adams is facing increasing pressure to resign despite his defiance. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of the United States was one of the first well-known politicians to call for Adams’ resignation, saying it would be best for the city if he did so. Similar remarks were made by other Democratic opponents, such as New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who emphasized that the accusations jeopardize Adams’ capacity to lead effectively.

Series of Resignations

Recent weeks have seen a series of resignations from Adams’ administration as several of his closest allies have been implicated in federal investigations. Only a few weeks after FBI investigators confiscated his personal devices, Schools Chancellor David Banks declared he would be retiring at the end of the year.

Following the confiscation of his phone, Police Commissioner Edward Caban tendered his resignation in early September. The top legal counsel and the health commissioner of the city are among the other well-known resignations.

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would become interim mayor until a special election is called if Adams resigned or was removed from office. However, Adams’ defense team is anticipated to ask for an expedited trial in order to clear his name, even as federal prosecutors get ready to unveil the indictment.
