Will Sheikh Hasina Contest Elections In Bangladesh? Here’s What His Son Reveals

Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has confirmed that the former Bangladeshi Prime Minister will return to her country “the moment” the interim government, led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, announces the upcoming elections. For now, Hasina is in India, where she sought refuge after her government’s collapse.

Yunus took office as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on Thursday, August 8, following the resignation of Hasina and the subsequent dissolution of her administration. The interim government has been tasked with overseeing the next elections, in which Hasina’s Awami League party will not participate.

Joy dismissed any speculation that his mother might seek asylum in another country, emphasizing that she intends to return to Bangladesh as soon as the electoral process is set in motion. He expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledging his role in ensuring Hasina’s safety, saying, “I thank Prime Minister Modi for saving my mother’s life on such short notice.”

Currently, Sheikh Hasina is staying in a secure location in New Delhi. She fled Bangladesh on August 5, arriving at the Hindon Air Force Base in Ghaziabad, near the Indian capital, after the political turmoil in her country forced her to seek temporary refuge.
